Roundtable on "Funding Opportunities for Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings"

A roundtable on Funding Opportunities for Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings was held within the project Local Partnerships for Greener Cities and Region, implemented by the Hydro-Engineering Institute Sarajevo. The abovementioned roundtable is one in a series of projects activities implemented with the aim of reaching the objective of improved energy efficiency in buildings of public administration in the pilot area of the City of Sarajevo. The roundtable was attended by representatives of the City of Sarajevo and its municipalities, UNDP, the Environmental Protection Fund, and representatives of NGOs. This was also an opportunity to present the establishment of a Revolving Fund for energy efficiency projects the focus of which is directed towards cantons and municipalities. The aim of the Fund is to provide mechanisms that will allow funding of further energy efficiency projects from savings, with an emphasis on return of investment. The establishment of this Fund is planned for the end of the year 2015 and the project is implemented by the UNDP and the FB&H Environmental Protection Fund.

Roundtable participants agreed that taking steps to improve energy efficiency in public administration buildings is of great importance, as these are considered to be major energy consumers whose positive attitude towards energy consumption can serve as an example and lead the way for others as well.

HEIS is Paving the Way to the New Frontiers in Karstology

Mr. Simone Milanolo, lead researcher at HEIS and Head of Water Quality Laboratory has successfully defended his PhD Dissertation entitled “Sources and transport of inorganic carbon in the unsaturated zone of karst” on November 5th 2014 at the University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia.

The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to a better understanding of the inorganic carbon path inside a limestone massif. Thus, it explains extremely interesting yet very complex system of chemical equilibrium between different forms of inorganic carbon in the rock, percolating water and the carbon present in the gas phase, which plays an important role in the genesis of karst features.

Another peculiarity about this dissertation is that it represents an extensive hydrogeological research of the “Bijambare” protected area, located around 25 km north of Sarajevo. Mentors of Mr. Milanolo were two internationally known karst experts, i.e. Prof. Franci Gabrovšek, Karst Research Institute Postojna, Slovenia and Prof. Frank McDermott, University of Dublin, Ireland.

Summary of the PhD Dissertation can be viewed here:
